UnLtd WA partners with Shooting Stars and zero2hero

UnLtd Perth has partnered with two new WA-based charities, Shooting Stars and zero2hero, to help improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal girls and to help prevent mental illness and suicide amongst teenagers.

UnLtd is a social purpose organisation that connects the skills and resources of the media, marketing and creative industry with impactful charities working with at-risk kids. Through the partnership, the charities will be matched with individuals and companies in the industry to tackle various marketing and strategy challenges to help the charities grow and reach more kids who need their help.

Shooting Stars is a highly successful educational program that uses sport and other tools to encourage greater school engagement with Aboriginal girls in regional WA. Currently, less than 40% of Aboriginal girls in remote communities complete Year 12, leaving them less likely to find employment. Shooting Stars runs an innovative sport and support program in regional WA empowering and inspiring over 400 young Aboriginal girls to take control over their own education. The program is also a key driver in creating leadership opportunities for the students and equality for Aboriginal female leaders, with 85% of its staff and 66% of its Board identifying as Aboriginal.

Following several months of rigor in learning more about Shooting Stars and its potential for growth, UnLtd was delighted to match them with Initiative and SBS as their social purpose partners to help them build awareness, create content and share their inspiring story.

Carol Morris, General Manager of UnLtd WA said:

“Shooting Stars programs are incredibly successful at tackling a major social issue in WA. Their power in yarning with the girls and leaders to create relevant, meaningful and effective programs is testament to the close relationships and respect they all share in their communities. These young girls deserve an education, they need ongoing support and mentoring and they deserve to have the potential to fulfil their dreams. We also know our industry has a unique set of skills to help and a passion for helping our Aboriginal communities and we’re looking forward to working together to create positive change.”

The other new charity partner is zero2hero, a WA based youth mental health and suicide prevention charity that works to educate young people about mental health and wellbeing and to empower young leaders to become mental health ambassadors in their community. They run programs in over 100 WA schools as well as camps on mental health leadership, reaching over 22,000 young people each year.

Ashlee Harrison, CEO at Zero2Hero said:

“We are so excited to be partnering with UnLtd and working with the wider advertising industry to help combat mental ill-health amongst young people. Suicide is still the biggest killer of young Western Australians and with 75% of mental health issues formed by the age of 25, it is vital that we address this during the formative years. The media, marketing and creative industry can play a vital role in changing these stats and we can’t wait to work together to create strong young minds.”
